Students from a number of organizations displayed a wide range of talents at "The Showcase" that was staged last week in the cafeteria.
Six organizations came together to participate in the event under the auspices of The Inspirational Gospel Ensemble (IGE) headed by Keywaun Caulk. The other organizations involved were the African Heritage Society (AHS), Black Men's Alliance (BMA), Haitian Cultural Association (HCA), Nubian Ladies Making Vital Progress and Pri'sizhen.
Each organization brought a different flavor to the evening. BMA hosted the event, with the hosts Kendal Hudgins, Travis Carter and Thuani Hoang, and offered a dance performance by senior Trelon Graham. In addition, the African Heritage Society introduced a display of African fashion and African dance. The Haitian Cultural association provided some Caribbean food like pasta, black rice and beverages after the show. They also gave a fashion show and poetry recitation. The Nubian Ladies also had a fashion show presentation while Pri'sizhen gave a step show/dance performance. The sponsors, IGE performed as well. They belted out gospel music and presented a praise dance routine.
Organizers all felt the event was a success. Turek Wallace, Pri'sizhen president and accounting major, said he was pleased with his organization's performance. "I was very satisfied," he said. "The girls [of Pri'sizhen] were great last night. They turned into performers. I am really pleased because this is the comeback year for us. We needed to come back strong and we did."
Travis Carter, a junior business management major and one of the hosts of the night, was also happy about the outcome. "I really enjoyed myself as a host and a fan," he said. "I had no other choice but to join in the fun because everyone else was having a ball."
"All of the organizations put a lot of effort into this. They worked really hard and it showed in all their performances," said Schenike Massie, junior psychology major.
"I think it was really good and I learned a lot about African American culture," said Ann Simon, freshman and biology major. Freshman Lupita Villalobos said, "I wasn't going to go, but Yvonne [Commodore-Mensah] 'ra' and Corazon Katrina Domagas were in it and I decided to go and support them. I'm really glad I went."
The president of the sponsoring organization (the Inspirational Gospel Ensemble), Keywaun Caulk, junior and psychology major, summed it up when he said, "The show was a huge success. I believe that the membership of the organizations that participated in the show will rise because of that night. There was a great turnout and there will be more of these to come. Hopefully, we can have something annually."

I enjoyed the article, however, there was one mistake. Turek Wallace (my son) is not an accounting major; his major is business management.

The fact that six organizations were able to work together recently at the Fairleigh Dickinson University cafeteria -- under the auspices of the Inspirational Gospel Ensemble -- must be commended. (Continued…)
