Starbucks in the SUB? Students welcome idea

Issue date: 11/9/06 Section: News
A Starbucks coffee shop is close to becoming a reality on this campus, on the lower level of the Student Union Building (SUB), starting with the Fall '07 semester, according to Andrew Restivo, Student Government president. Many students say they're thrilled.

"Thank God for this news!" said Cristy Ziegler, a junior communications major. "First, they took away the Pub. Then, they took away Taco Bell. They should do something in return for that!" she exclaimed. Ziegler thinks that even more students will go to the SUB once they're able to get Starbucks coffee there. "There's obviously going to be more foot traffic in the SUB; people are going to be there all the time," she said. "I hope Public Safety is ready for that!"

The issue was discussed at a Student Government Association meeting about three weeks ago and senators were presented a plan for the coffee shop. Restivo seemed to be satisfied with the reaction from students. "There isn't one student that I talked to that didn't think this is a great idea," said Restivo. "All students and faculty seem very receptive to the idea of having this coffee house on campus and, hey, why wouldn't they?"

"The SGA along with several student groups expressed a need for a coffee shop on campus (Madison has one)," said Michelle McCroy-Heinz, Dean of Students. "Theresa Gallo, ASC-US senator, brought this request to Bob Valenti, assistant vice president for Administration; and he had the Starbucks chain look at potential sites for a shop. Andrew Restivo, an engineering student, created a floor plan for a Starbucks, utilizing the bottom floor of the SUB which has wireless access." The dean is optimistic about the plan and thinks that chances of the plan becoming a reality are high. "I personally think the chances of getting a coffee shop on campus are pretty good," she said. "A number of student groups have expressed a real interest in not having to run to Barnes and Noble every time they want a cup of java."

Natalia Galbetti, the SGA media board senator, believes in the coffee ritual and expressed happiness when hearing the news. "Coffee is something college students love and there's no place with good or actually any coffee for that matter around here. Studying while drinking a cup of coffee just makes the whole experience a lot less torturing."
